DIY leather wallets. How to make a leather wallet with your own hands

Good afternoon. Make your own wallet? Leather? With a snake and a coin compartment? Easily! We present to your attention a handmade leather wallet.

To make it you needed:

  • zipper and slider
  • mesh fabric (for lining)
  • leather for the inside
  • glue (nairit)
  • sewing machine

It all starts with a pattern. We need to cut off the skin for the main part of the wallet.

We thin out the edges using sandpaper or a file. We will tuck them (the edges). We mark the grille (cladding) with chalk. We sew everything with a machine, along with the lining. The seam is approximately 6 mm.

We cut out special inserts from cardboard (for rigidity). Glue them.

We cut out the inner part from cheaper leather. We use split wood.

We stitch together. Then we sew it to the base.

Sew in the zipper (main). We smoothly sheathe it around the entire perimeter. We cut out an internal partition and a pocket from split wood.

We sew it in. It is important to use a thin thread so that knots from machine sewing do not stick out at the top. The skin is very sensitive to these little things.

The wallet is ready! Thank you for your attention!

And that was a long time ago. The wallet will have to be done long and hard, having first purchased and prepared the right leather. To create this homemade product, we will need many tools, which you will become familiar with in the photo instructions and my description.
You can always carry the created leather wallet with you, store money and even business cards in it. I wanted to create a rectangular, oblong wallet, but you can choose absolutely any size you want. I chose light brown leather and metal studs. If you do everything correctly, then you can make a lot of similar wallets, and especially use them as gifts.

How to make a leather wallet with your own hands.

Here's what we need:

Sewing machine;
A piece of leather;
Rulers of various lengths;
A figured ruler (in our case these are circles);
Glue moment;
Scissors, preferably larger ones;
Awl;
Leather cutter;

Everything is shown in the photo. All tools.

First, I cut out patterns from paper for all the parts that we will need.

We place the patterns compactly on a piece of leather, so that we make the most of the space.

We traced the patterns with an awl and began cutting them out.

Using a regular retractable blade, cut out a window in the main part.

The first step is ready, it was the easiest, now it will be a little more difficult.

We round the corners on these cut out parts.

Take moment glue and spread it on the bottom of the main part, as shown in the photo.

We bend the edge and press it down with something heavy so that it sticks better. But initially we iron it with a roller.

Place the snake into the cut out window. It is advisable to choose a high-quality snake, as if it breaks and constantly comes apart, then it will be very difficult to replace it. Buy it with large cloves.

We do the usual embossing under the snake; this will decorate the leather wallet and make it branded and exclusive.

We measure 7-9 centimeters from the edge of the main part and glue the pockets. We will need them for business cards.

We take two leather strips and glue them together. It will take a long time for the glue to dry, so you can immediately glue the necessary parts together and rest a little.

When the glue is applied, we immediately smooth it with a roller so that the skin is even and not lumpy.

Under the ruler, we cut off the edge that was a little uneven.

We make a rounding on the edge of the leather strip. To do this, take a figured ruler and large scissors.

Now is a very important moment. We take our wallet parts and go to the sewing machine, sew the snake, then the edge under the pocket for business cards, the pocket itself and finally the clasp for the wallet.

Now we glue a second, narrow strip of leather for pockets for business cards. Let's draw it into two parts, I suggest taking one standard card or business card and trying it on so that you don't make the pockets too small. And then we sew.

We make a small marking where the folds will be, and fold the two parts for the bills. We put on clips to highlight the stripes.

Fold the wallet in half and try on the clasp. This is how it will be.

Using an awl we make marks where the rivets will be.

The same goes for the other side of the wallet.

We make not very large holes with a hammer or with tongs like this as shown in the photo.

We take a small hand press and make fittings using it.

This is what we got at the beginning.

Then we take a separate piece of leather and completely lubricate it with moment, this is necessary to strengthen the wallet.

We wrap the skin in the part where the zipper is. Next, this will be a large pocket where you can store small change. Don't forget to use a roller.

On the side where the pockets for cards are, I glue both sides and secure them with clips.

We also glue and clamp on the other side. We wait a certain time until the glue dries.

Again, we make stitches on a sewing machine, for beauty and reliability.

We completely cut off the excess edges, just do not touch the threads.

Using a hammer and a punch, we make holes in the corners to insert rivets there; they will look beautiful there and will further strengthen the leather wallet with your own hands.

Again, we install the fittings using a press.

If you have a rubber mallet, you should tap the leather a little so that it is softer and the corners become more neat and refined, so to speak natural.

We made this wallet out of leather with our own hands. See the photo of the wallet from all sides.

Now you can use the wallet or give it to someone for a holiday. Then you can continue to make such things in different sizes or take leather of a different color.
Together with your wallet you can make or and you will be completely exclusive.

Nothing boosts self-confidence like making something with your own hands. It is a source of pride that you can make an original, exclusive thing that no one else has. And nothing will upset you more than an expensive purchase that does not live up to your expectations. This article describes how a man can make his own practical and reliable wallet.

Your old battered wallet

In everyday life, your wallet is used more than any other accessory, and while most fashion brand wallets look great on display, in real life they tend to lose their luster after a few months of heavy use. To ensure real sales growth, the manufacturer deliberately makes them so that they wear out quickly. Therefore, before spending money on buying a new wallet, you should think and make it yourself so that you will not part with it for the rest of your life.

Wallet design concepts.

Pattern for a wallet

The basis of the wallet's design concept is its well-thought-out design. Featured here is a modern looking wallet design with a streamlined shape and a clean surface. Its dimensions were determined taking into account the sizes of banknotes of the world's main currencies. This wallet design is known as the Ambrosian design, which consists of four pieces of leather that are folded and stitched into a wallet with one bill pocket and six card pockets.

Materials

Leather

You will need about 0.2 square meters of leather. It is desirable that the leather be vegetable tanned and have a thickness of 3.2 mm. You can use a lighter thickness of leather if you want your wallet to be very thin, and a thicker thickness if you don't mind the extra bulk of your wallet. Other types of leather can be used, but it is important that the leather is relatively tough to ensure the firmness of your wallet.

Sewing

The color of the sewing thread should complement the color of the leather you choose. If you are not sure, ask your wife, mother or mother-in-law for help. As a rule, darker threads go well with the color of the selected leather. As for the thickness of the thread, it is recommended to use those whose thickness is no less than TEX138 and no more than TEX270 (determines the weight in grams of one kilometer of thread)

Required Tools

  • Scissors
  • Furrier's knife (Razor)
  • Square
  • (2) latches
  • Awl (or punch)
  • Thimble
  • (2) ball piercing needle.

Making a wallet

STEP 1

Cutting patterns and transferring them to the skin

If you agree with the proposed design, the first thing you need to do is print out the design and cut out paper patterns of all the parts of the wallet. Next, carefully and carefully transfer them to a sheet of leather.

SHAG 2

Cutting out the wallet pieces and marking the seams

Now you will have to carefully cut out the intended parts from the leather. Cutting leather with clean cuts is easy to do with a rotary blade and a pressed square, or use a furrier's knife. Once the wallet pieces are cut out, you need to punch holes in them for stitching. To do this, use clamps to attach the corresponding pattern to the part and, in strict accordance with it, use an awl or an appropriate punch to punch evenly spaced holes. Do this with all four pieces. The holes punched should be large enough for the needles and thread used so that they go through without too much resistance. I note that it is better not to sew by hand without markings, as the seam will look sloppy.

STEP 3

Stitching Wallet Pieces

Now you are ready to sew the pieces together. First, smaller parts A and B are sewn at the top level to part C, and then the assembled structure is sewn on the sides from above to part D. Next, joining along the punched perforation, we form pockets for cards. For clarity, the figure shows colored stitches with the starting and ending points of sewing. There are various methods for hand stitching, but for this assembly, it is recommended that you use the hand stitching - saddle method. Stitching is ensured by one thread with two needles at its ends. To join two pieces together, align the holes in them and the interlacing thread of the two needles passing through that aligned hole.

Sewing method - saddle

STEP 4

The order of formation of lines

To begin with, it is recommended to start with the blue stitch on part B. This stitch requires about 70 cm of thread. Pass one needle through the first hole at starting point B. Pull the thread through the hole until the needles have equal ends on both sides of the leather. Take one needle and run it through the next hole on the same side of the skin. Another needle through the same hole on the opposite side. Grasp both needles and pull the stitching nice and tight. After the fourth hole, you need to start hemming piece D to piece B. Once you have reached the end point, then you need to pass both needles to the back side and intertwine the two threads as shown in the middle of the picture, where they are both on the back side of piece B. Take these two needles and use them to hem piece B to piece C.

STEP 5

To complete the blue stitching on piece B, insert the needles between the two aligned holes of pieces B and C, as shown in the photo above. After this, make sure the blue stitching is nice and tight along its entire length and make any necessary adjustments. If everything is in order, you can tie the two strands by making three consecutive knots at the top.

STEP 6

Formation of red stitching on part B

The red stitch on part A connects it to parts D and C and has the opposite shape, but the same technique as the blue stitch.

Continuing the formation of stitches

We form a stitch where the first 18 holes of this stitch will be used to connect pieces B and A to piece C. Once you get to the corners, you will start connecting piece B and piece A to piece D and the stitches will cover the sides of the wallet.

STEP 8

Completing the formation of stitches

When we bring the lines to the lower corners of part D, we bring the threads through the middle of the corner, tie them with three knots and cut off the remaining thread. Your wallet is ready!

PS

Did you feel the difference? Now you will have a stylish wallet that is pleasant to hold in your hands and feels like it is completely yours. In your great-grandfather's generation, people often made their own clothes, furniture and shoes. When you work with your hands now to make something that means a lot to you, you are making a statement that craftsmanship and pride in what you can do and do are fundamental values today and still relevant to men today.

A leather wallet is not an extra attribute that creates style. This accessory must be of high quality, durable and comfortable. Sewing a leather wallet with your own hands is not an easy task, the main thing is to find a pattern. This will require good starting materials and a steady hand. Not many people succeed in making a neat thing the first time, so before trying the ideas from these master classes, practice on leatherette. You need to learn how to make straight seams and carefully install fittings. Having mastered these skills, you will be able to sew original handmade wallets for yourself and as gifts for friends.

Materials and tools

To work with leather you need furrier's tools:

  • Roller knife. This is a round blade attached to a handle. It differs from ordinary scissors in that the cut is perfectly even.
  • Awl. This sewing tool is indispensable when working with leather. With its help, holes are made in advance through which the thread is threaded and the parts are sewn together.
  • Stamp for stitching. With its help, you can immediately make a number of identical holes. The tool looks like a small fork. By applying the punch to the leather and hitting its handle with a hammer, we get an even row for decorative stitching.
  • Synthetic threads. Strong threads of contrasting or the same color as the material are suitable for decorating a wallet. They can be replaced with a waxed cord, which is as durable as synthetics. Before work, rub the cord with a piece of beeswax and get a thread ready for use.
  • Accessories. These are various magnets, clips, rivets, buttons for decorating the edges. Decorative elements are matched to the tone of the material and can imitate bronze and gilding.
  • Thick gypsy needle with a wide eye. For sewing, choose needles marked “for leather.”
  • Relief stamps. They are used to decorate wallets with an embossed pattern. For hot stamping, the stamps are heated over a fire.
  • Dye. Designed for tinting edges and cuts. The color matches the skin color. To restore damaged areas, use a special primer for the skin, and then apply paint.
  • Sandpaper. With its help, the edges are rounded and the thickness of the material is reduced. For work, take small paper marked P400.
  • Wooden sticks. For ironing parts and applying glue.
  • Rubber glue. Needed to secure the edge and protect the internal compartments from water.

Important! In some models, DIY leather wallets are created based on a pattern that does not need to be sewn. The parts are glued together and stitched with decorative stitching.

Which leather should you choose?

The best are considered to be veal and goat (chevro), and the least suitable is pork. It gets wet quickly and isn't very pretty. Skin is also divided into:

  • smooth;
  • polished;
  • embossed;
  • suede;
  • varnish;
  • nappa;
  • skin of reptiles and exotic animals.

Based on one pattern, using different leather, an experienced craftsman can make completely different wallets.

Important! Thin leather should only be used with lining materials - cardboard and non-woven fabric.

How to work with leather?

Making wallets has its own tricks. This material is different from fabric and requires a completely different approach. The most important thing in the work is the precise pattern, which is made from thick cardboard or wood.

Important! Thin paper patterns will wrinkle and it will be impossible to cut out an even piece.

Operating procedure:

  1. We lay out a piece of leather on a hard and flat surface - linoleum, a special mat.
  2. We transfer the template to the front side of the material.
  3. Mark the places for the seams.
  4. We make holes for the stitching.
  5. Then the product is assembled and the edges are tinted.

This is the basic procedure for working with a wallet pattern. If you sew the pieces together right away, without pre-made holes, the product will come out crooked.

Important! The parts are also sewn together using a sewing machine. But an even stitch is easy to do by hand. To do this, they use a special method - working with two needles. The first goes from below, the second from above. The threads are threaded through the same hole.

Women's homemade wallet

Let's see how to sew a leather wallet for a woman's handbag:

  • First, let's choose the material. It should be light, 1-1.5 mm thick, for lining - 0.8 mm. The colors are chosen to suit your taste; the leather of exotic animals and suede look good.
  • As a rule, the wallet pattern is first selected, and then the leather is selected to match it.
  • The wallet should have three compartments - for cards, coins and bills.

Important! Handmade means taking into account the needs of the owner of the item, so you can make additional pockets for business cards and a phone, or a zippered compartment.

Large wallet

This spacious wallet features compartments for coins, bills, business cards, credit cards, a note pocket and a smartphone compartment.

You will need:

  • double-sided thin skin;
  • threads;
  • magnet;
  • needles;
  • glue;
  • padding polyester;
  • cardboard.

Operating procedure:

  1. We mark a rectangle measuring 20*27.5 cm, divide it into 3 parts with a width of 8.5, 9.5 and 9.5 cm
  2. We prepare 2 cardboard inserts measuring 8.5*19 cm and one 7.5*19 cm. We seal them with padding polyester.
  3. We glue the cardboard with padding polyester and the leather, bending the edge by 5 mm.
  4. At a distance of 2 cm from the edge, we make two slits and secure the button magnet.
  5. Let's start with the lining. For this we use the suede side of the leather. We cut out the part and secure it with threads using a seam over the edge.
  6. Glue the lining to the cardboard.
  7. Making an inner pocket. To do this, we cut out a partition from cardboard measuring 19*8.5 cm, and from leather 20*17 cm with an allowance of 5 mm on each edge.
  8. Fold the leather in half and cover the cardboard piece.
  9. We make a face valve measuring 20*9.5 cm and seal it with cardboard and padding polyester.
  10. At a distance of 1 cm from the edge we mount the second half of the magnet.
  11. We make pockets for business cards from 5 pieces of leather measuring 7*8 cm. We lay them out one on top of the other, glue them, and sew them along the edge.
  12. Then we sew them to the top flap of the wallet.
  13. All that remains is to make the wedges and assemble the wallet. Cut out 4 rectangles, 3*8.5 cm.
  14. We sew them to the inner pockets and cover.
  15. Make a fold at the bottom of the piece and, tucking it in, sew the bottom of the wedges to the cover.

Important! You can replace natural leather with artificial leather. It is not as strong, but it is easier to work with.

Handmade men's wallet with photo

Sewing a man's wallet is not an easy task, but it requires patience and knowledge. For men's wallets, choose thick leather, for example, buffalo, cow, goat. A material thickness of 2-2.2 mm is sufficient, otherwise the product will be quite heavy.

What wallet models do men most often choose?

  • The chest pocket wallet is a classic option that can be conveniently carried in the inside pocket of a jacket.
  • Double fold is the most common men's model. Compact and roomy.
  • Cardholder is a miniature wallet with a clip for money and bank cards.
  • Traveler is a large wallet with a compartment for a passport.

If a person is used to carrying a lot of things with him, then in addition to the standard compartments, you can make a pocket for flash drives, insurance, and a clip for keys.

Let's learn how to sew a high-quality men's wallet from genuine leather with your own hands.

Important! The dimensions of the wallet are selected according to the palm of the owner.

Purse

This large wallet folds down the middle. Consists of two compartments for banknotes and credit cards:

  1. Transfer the template, cut out 2 parts for internal pockets, 3 strips for card compartments, and a large base piece.
  2. We attach the pockets with glue, lay a line along the edge and middle of the part.
  3. We sew the pockets.
  4. Glue the side parts onto the larger piece.
  5. Sew along the holes marked with a stamp.
  6. We tint the corners of the product with paint and polish it with oil.

Important! To protect the top layer from moisture, the finished product is impregnated with oil.

Folding wallet

This summer version of the wallet will be suitable for beginners. It is simple, lightweight and consists of a central compartment for money and a pocket for cards:

  1. Cut out two rectangles, measuring 21*8.5 and 22*8.5 cm.
  2. In the smaller part we make a cut the width of a credit card. Use a hole punch to make a hole along the edge of the cut so that the card can be easily inserted.
  3. We round the edges of the parts.
  4. We mark holes along the seam, leaving a small area in the middle of the wallet.
  5. Sew with contrasting thread.

Important! If the skin is too thick, then it needs to be trimmed with a special tool - a groove cutter. It removes a small layer and makes the material more flexible.

If you are fascinated by the process of such creativity, then continue to experiment with our ideas. The proposed options will definitely not leave you indifferent!

Master class on making a leather wallet with your own hands -

For work we will need:

  • a piece of thick leather about 0.2 m2 in size;
  • strong threads of a suitable color;
  • scissors;
  • roller knife;
  • metal ruler;
  • awl;
  • 2 needles.

Let's get started

  1. Let's print out a pattern for our leather wallet. We will sew a classic men's wallet with six pockets for credit cards. Its dimensions are selected in such a way that paper money from any country and any denomination can fit in the wallet. You can either draw the pattern details yourself using the given dimensions, or download and print them on a regular printer.
  2. Let's cut out the templates of the parts from thick cardboard.
  3. We transfer the pattern to the leather, making sure that the parts are the same size and do not move during cutting.
  4. We cut the leather using a roller knife. This must be done by running a knife under the ruler. This will help you get even and neat cuts.
  5. We use an awl to punch holes on the parts for future connecting seams. The diameter of the holes should be such that needles can pass through them freely.
  6. We put all the parts of our wallet together so that the holes for the seams match.
  7. We begin to sew together the parts of the wallet using a special seam, working with two needles at the same time. Stitching should begin with the lines marked in blue on the diagram.
  8. We pull one needle through the hole in part B and pull until the lengths of thread on both sides are equal. Then we begin to connect parts B and D, making sure that the threads are tensioned tightly enough. Having finished connecting the parts, we fasten and cut the working thread.
  9. We perform the remaining seams in the same way, and then carefully fasten the ends of the working thread and cut it.
  10. As a result, we get such a neat wallet that will easily fit in any pocket!
